Volume Seven (January - March 2022)
In this seventh edition of Wilder Magazine, we hear from German adventurer and ultra-endurance athlete, Jonas Deichmann, about his incredible round-the-world triathlon. Adventure photographer and environmental activist, Yan Kaczynski, narrates stories from Pakistan’s Karakoram Mountains, where communities are adapting to a changing climate. British adventurer, Aaron Rolph, explores the remote Tien Shan Mountains of Kyrgyzstan, and Alba Xandri follows the Gran Guanche cycling route across the Canary Islands. Social educator and visual storyteller, Ana-Maria Pavalache, documents an empowering initiative in southern Tajikistan, focused on the training of young female wildlife guides. Ultra-cyclist, Axel Carion, navigates the lithium-rich salt flats of the Atacama Desert, and for our Portfolio series we feature talented Kenyan wildlife photographer, Clement Kiragu. Finally, Jan Fox takes on the ultraMARAthon — a stunning 50-kilometre footrace across the wilds of Kenya’s Maasai Mara.
Volume Six (October - December 2021)
In this sixth edition, we hear from world-renowned photographer, Nick Brandt, about his latest body of work, The Day May Break, portraying people and animals impacted by climate change. Our Portfolio series profiles James Lewin, an exceptional young wildlife photographer who has partnered with conservation organisations across East Africa. Also in East Africa, Alba Xandri narrates an epic trip on two wheels across Kenya’s central highlands. Josh Clay gives an insight into the mind and meticulous work of Murray Grant, a skilful Kenyan sculptor of wildlife bronzes. Moving up to the wild isles of Scotland, Aaron Rolph tackles rough seas in his kayak. Pete Elliott scales the iron paths of the Italian Dolomites, and British expedition leader, Oli France, narrates a solo traverse of the frozen surface of Lake Baikal — the deepest freshwater lake on Earth. Emily Sullivan embarks on a summer journey deep in Alaska, and Kieran Creevy cooks an outdoor feast and paddles calm waters in the Swedish Wilderness.
Volume Five (July - September 2021)
In this fifth edition of Wilder Magazine, we focus on East Africa’s mountain and rock climbing scene. James Farr documents a rare ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro’s Mawenzi Peak. Kang-Chun Cheng explores the culture of climbing and outdoor participation in Kenya. Also in Kenya, we feature the inaugural Migration Gravel Race — a 650 km gravel cycling race across the Maasai Mara landscape. In our Portfolio series, we profile Kenyan travel photographer, Trevor Maingi. Moving out of East Africa, Aaron Rolph and his British Adventure Collective team tackle the Welsh 3000ers challenge — summiting 15 peaks above 3,000 feet within 24 hours. We speak to world-renowned explorer, writer and photographer, Levison Wood, about his new book, The Art of Exploration. David Dinsley, warden of The Oa reserve on Scotland’s Isle of Islay, narrates his encounters with enigmatic birds of prey. We feature another tasty outdoor cooked meal by Kieran Creevy, and ultracyclist, Axel Carion, pedals across the stunning and extreme landscapes of Bolivia.
Volume Four (April - June 2021)
Our main features in this fourth edition of Wilder illustrate that outdoor exploration is as much an internal process as it is physical and geographical. Photographer, Bobby Neptune, turns to the outdoors to heal from a personal trauma, exploring Kenya’s wild spaces from the air in his motorised paraglider. Ecologist, Joey Knelman, finds a sense of belonging through berry picking in the Norwegian tundra, and mountain guide, Emily Sullivan, explores her relationship with fear in the outdoors. BASE jumper, Tim Howell, attempts a landmark wingsuit flight on Mount Kenya, and bikepacking enthusiasts, Alba Xandri and Ricard Calmet, cycle 1,000 kilometres across Oman’s Al-Hajar Mountains. We hear from eco-explorer, Mario Rigby, about his epic 12,000 kilometre solo walking expedition across Africa, and profile renowned wildlife and landscape photographer, Gurcharan Roopra, in our new Portfolio series. We also assess the social and environmental impact of an avocado farm on Kenya’s Greater Amboseli ecosystem.
Volume Three (Jan - March 2021)
In this third issue of Wilder, we feature three unique endurance trail running stories from Canada and Kenya. As part of her mission to run unsupported across a mountain range on every continent, Jenny Tough attempts a solo traverse of the Canadian Rockies. In central Kenya, three long distance runners swap tarmac for the rugged trails of Mount Kenya, in pursuit of the fastest known time up and down Africa’s second highest peak. Also in Kenya, we profile the first ultra marathon in the Maasai Mara, in aid of the rangers who risk their lives to protect its wildlife. We then hear from grassroots conservation leader, and winner of the 2020 Tusk Award for Conservation in Africa, John Kamanga, about his vision for the co-existence of pastoralists and wildlife. We take a road trip across Namibia’s open plains, and trek with a family of mountain gorillas in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. We also witness the consequences of climate change in Alaska’s Denali National Park, and explore the vast Brooks Range on two wheels.
Volume Two (Oct - Dec 2020)
In this second edition, we hear from world-renowned photographer, Chris Burkard, about his recent bikepacking adventure across Iceland. We also profile The Cairn Project — a nonprofit supporting community-based wilderness and outdoor education groups to expand outdoor access for girls and young women. We feature articles by two Cairn Project Ambassadors, Ashley Carruth on a backpacking trip with 10 female-identifying youths in Colorado’s Weminuche Wilderness, and Annie Le on one of many bikepacking excursions in the Scottish Highlands. A few hundred miles further north, we explore the rugged shores of the Shetland Islands, before heading south and trekking across Sudan’s little-visited Bayuda Desert. We then navigate wilderness trails in South Africa and Rwanda, and hike up northern Kenya’s Mount Ololokwe.
Volume One (July - Sept 2020)
In this first issue of Wilder Magazine, we present photo journals of stunning South American destinations, from the glacial valleys and steep ridges of the Andes in Argentina’s Neuquén Province, to the contrasting landscapes of Chile’s Atacama Desert and Torres del Paine National Park. We then explore the ancient Swahili ruins and isolated beaches of Kenya’s Manda Island, and feature Cameroon’s threatened Ebo Forest. We also hear from passionate environmental activist and adventurer, Ofir Drori, about his fight against wildlife crime and corruption across Africa, and his incredible escape from a Nile crocodile in Ethiopia’s Omo River. Lastly, we head to Tanzania’s Mahale National Park, one of the best places in the world to observe chimpanzees up close in the wild.
